What is yoga?

Yoga is a science developed in India over many centuries. The literal meaning of yoga is "union" or "communion."

Yoga has 4 main branches (Karma, Bhakti, Jnana, and Raja).

Asana (postures) of Hatha yoga is one of the 8 limbs of Raja yoga. The purpose of Hatha yoga is to bring conscious mental control over the physical body.

What is Bikram's yoga?

Bikram's yoga is a demanding set of 26 asanas, to be performed in a specific order to the best of one's ability. Bikram developed and perfected his method over several years, with his own expertise, guidance from his guru, and in consultation with Western medical doctors.

Bikram's yoga is especially suited to curing the ailments brought about by the strains of life in the Western world.

 

Why is the room hot?

The room is kept hot intentionally. The heat allows your body to warm up quickly to reduce the possibility of injury to your muscles, joints, and tendons.

 

How much time should I dedicate to a class?

Although classes are only 90 minutes long, you should allow yourself about 2 hours in order to change and warm up before class, and to shower and change after class.
